Jackman’s Eco Team (a.k.a. The JETs)

Hey Kids,

At Jackman, being ECO is something we’re always thinking and talking about.  Our new motto is, ‘Every Day is Earth Day at Jackman!‘ -  La journée de la terre, chaque jour!

Of course, being ECO doesn’t happen by accident… it happens because we make it happen.  To tell you the truth, it’s a lot of hard work.  And that’s where you come in... we need some students to be Jackman’s ECO leaders.

Jackman’s Eco Team will meet every Wednesday at 12 o’clock to work on various ECO projects.

Are you interested?   If so, pick up a ‘job application’ today.  Looking forward to working with you.

               Mr. Cressman

Bike Week

Last week, Jackman celebrated it’s first Bike Week and it was a huge success.    Families were encouraged to leave their cars at home and bike to school instead.  The number of students biking to school more than doubled, with as many as 165 bikers some days.  We’ll definitely need some new bike racks if this trend continues.  Looks like we’re creating a new generation of bike enthusiasts.

On Monday bikers were awarded with stickers and on Tuesday bikers enjoyed muffins.  Then, kids decorated their bikes with straws and ribbons on Wednesday.  On Thursday, many classes discussed bike safety and other bike ideas.  Finally, on Friday, bikers entered a contest to win 1 of 8 prizes.  Congratulations prize winners!

And congratulations to all bikers!   You’ve chosen an eco-friendly, healthy way to travel to school.  Now, that’s something to celebrate.

Jackman's T-Shirt Contest

This spring, Jackman held a contest to design next year's Eco t-shirt.  There was a lot of enthusiasm for the contest and more than 120 submissions.

This year's winner is Sam Tustin in grade 2.  Congratulations Sam for your fantastic drawing and slogan.  Way to go!

New Eco t-shirts will be available for purchase next fall.

Maple Syrup Project Makes Headlines

Our maple syrup project has been a huge success.   We've been collecting sap for nearly 4 weeks now.  We've got more than 80 litres of sap.  The whole school community has been engaged with the project.  On Wednesday this week, we will boil down the sap in the schoolyard.  We can't wait!

The Toronto Star interviewed us this week and has shared the excitement with the rest of the city.    Follow this link to see what was published in Friday's Star…

Jackman's Maple Syrup Project

Guess what?!?!   We've been tapping the maple trees in the school yard and we will soon be collecting sap to make real maple syrup.  Several Jackman classes are involved in the project but the whole school seems excited.

We've been waiting and waiting and waiting for the right temperatures and they're finally here.   Bye-bye winter… hello spring!   We have learned that sap flows best when daytime temperatures rise about 4˚C and nighttime temperature falls below 0˚C.

Many thanks to Darwin, Claudia, Helen, Lisa the rest of the Garden Crew for helping make Tuesday's tree tapping a huge success.

Don't be surprised if your kids start refusing 'table syrup' on their Eggos… because there's nothing better than all natural maple syrup.

Stay tuned for more maple syrup news.
